The Creation of a Digital Semiconductor Archive
Challenge
The semiconductor industry's extensive history, pivotal in ushering in the information age, was at risk of being underrepresented and overlooked in traditional historical documentation and preservation efforts. G. Dan Hutcheson, faced with the limitations of conventional media, sought an innovative way to capture and share the industry's legacy amid rapid technological advancements and shifts in how content is consumed globally. This task demanded a solution beyond the static nature of books or physical archives, which could not keep pace with the industry's dynamic evolution or cater to a digitally savvy audience.
Solution
In addressing these challenges, Dan envisioned a solution that went beyond traditional methods by establishing the Chip History Center as an interactive online platform. This initiative aimed to act as the Semiconductor Industry's History Channel on the Internet. To realize this vision, Exaqode was brought on board to build a comprehensive platform.

Key features of the solution included a complete UI redesign for mobile compatibility, migration to a dynamic CMS for easy content updates, and the integration of a backend application to manage the extensive library of historical materials. This project leveraged the latest in web technologies and design principles to ensure an engaging user experience while providing a deep dive into the semiconductor industry's history.

Result
The Chip History Center has become an invaluable resource for understanding the semiconductor industry's past, present, and future. It has successfully:

  • Preserved and showcased decades of semiconductor history through an extensive digital archive.
  • Enhanced global accessibility to historical data, making it easier for researchers, students, and enthusiasts to explore the semiconductor industry's legacy.
  • Provided educational resources tailored to K-12 educators, fostering a deeper understanding of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among students.
  • Continuously updated its content and technology to reflect the latest developments in the semiconductor industry, ensuring the platform remains a relevant and dynamic resource.

Technologies
The solution utilized a comprehensive tech stack to create a robust and user-friendly digital archive, including:

  • Frontend: HTML 5, CSS, Bootstrap 3, JavaScript, jQuery, JSON, XML for a responsive design compatible with various devices.
  • Backend: PHP 7 with a customized PHP Framework and RESTful APIs for efficient data management and content delivery.
  • Database: MySQL 5, ensuring robust data storage and retrieval capabilities.
  • Libraries and Plugins: Include DataTables, Lazyload, Dropzone, and Cropper for enhanced functionality and user experience.
  • Server Utilities: ImageMagick, FFmpeg, crontab for media processing and scheduled tasks.
  • Web Server: Apache, optimized for performance and reliability.
